Let’s Go To the Square at Sulphur Springs, TX!

Sulphur Springs, TX has some hidden gems just waiting to be discovered!

Sulphur Springs is located east of Dallas, TX just off I-30. Let’s look into a little about this hidden gem.

Pioneers where drawn to the over 100 natural, sulphur-infused mineral springs bubbling from the ground, believing the waters held powerful healing properties. In the late 1840s pioneers began camping near these springs and eventually built permanent homes.

The original name for the growing settlement was Bright Star. The name was officially changed to Sulphur Springs in 1854 to better reflect the geographic feature that defined the landscape.

Sulphur Springs became the County Seat of Hopkins County in 1871.

During the 19th century folks began to recognize the commercial value of the local waters. The town was marketed as a premier wellness destination and health resort. People traveled from all over the country to bathe in and drink the sulphur infused waters. Some thought the waters could cure ailments like arthritis and digestive issues.

In the 1870s, the railroad connected Sulphur Springs with major cities like Dallas. This helped the local cotton trade.

Today, the historic square is now Celebration Plaza. A pedestrian-friendly space features a splash pad, live music, and the famous “see-through” public restrooms (built with one-way mirrors so you can see out, but no one can see in).

The area has seen some renovation of late. This includes upgrades to the roads and bridges in the area. The bridge project over I-30 @ Broadway is scheduled to begin on June 8, 2026. While necessary, it could make getting around Sulphur Springs a little challenging. That is why Erika from the Plant Niche contacted business owners near the square to commissioned the videos below, to help you get to the Square a little easier.
